Marketing Effectiveness The Most Pressing Problem in Business Marketing Today

Introduction Marketing effectiveness can be defined as the â€Å"quality of marketers to optimize their efforts and achieve the best short-term and long-term results†. (Buyline Research 1, pp. 5) This concept is directly related to Return on Marketing Investment (ROMI) and ROI which are often utilized in the description of the relationship between costs and the returns gained mainly in the form of profits (Buyline Research 2).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Marketing Effectiveness: The Most Pressing Problem in Business Marketing Today specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It’s sometimes very difficult to measure the effectiveness of marketing activities either in advance or after they have been executed. The situation may be further complicated if a company uses different marketing strategies. This paper seeks to report on the difficulties that are frequently faced while measuring marketing eff ectiveness. It further describes how best the issue can be tackled by describing the strategies that can be employed to measure the effect of individual marketing activities. Difficulties in measuring marketing activities The current business environment is characterized by intense competition. Therefore firms cannot do without marketing activities such as advertising to promote their survival (King, pp. 2). Many companies usually face a dilemma in establishing whether their investment in marketing truly yields a competitive advantage for them or not. Companies can be disappointed after investing heavily in unsuccessful campaigns. However, even when good returns are realized, one should say it is not easy to determine the exact contribution of each marketing activity to that success. Research conducted indicates that most firms cannot hold their marketing departments accountable for the vast resources they use to carry out marketing activities. Few companies that have developed meas urement tools, are measuring the wrong things. The majority of them are not in a position to measure anything at all. The research indicates that about 54% of companies usually set their marketing budgets basing on historical data – clearly showing that they do not have any idea on the effectiveness (King, pp. 3). It is further noted that only about 20% of marketing executives are able to accurately estimate the impact that follows budget cuts. It’s further identified that firms that cannot accurately report on the progress of a marketing ROI usually do not have individuals that have been specifically assigned to that task (Powell 5).Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? In one particular study carried out in the year 2008, it was established that 100 biggest U.S retail banks use up to USD 2 billion on advertising annually. This implies that banks in today’s society must rely on advertisement for survival (Stern 17). Strategies for effective measurement of marketing Marketers should be in a position to collect all the data that are required to measure their marketing activities. They should be able to know the specific aspects as well as the priorities that should be measured. They should understand what should be measured in the future and most important why they are carrying out the measurements. A well planned measurement will give the firm the confidence to undertake innovations that bring a positive impact. Firms need to determine whether there are gaps in coverage, put measures in place to ensure that measurement is managed automatically rather than manually, and lastly the measurement should be integrated into the larger marketing portfolio rather be left on its own (Powell 27). Figure1: A chart showing marketing metrics continuum Identification of key performance indicators for marketing Research has revealed that marketing performance indicators usually vary depending on the specific areas of responsibility. Metrics for different areas of responsibility that are needed for effective monitoring of marketing activities include: The brand managers are required to monitor changes in statistics of aspects such as brandy equity, brand awareness, brand preference, brand image and brand loyalty (Buyline Research 12). It’s important to note that internal tools within the organization are used to collect data as an ongoing process.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Marketing Effectiveness: The Most Pressing Problem in Business Marketing Today specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, the best information for gauging the success of a brand is usually derived from the outside environment. Usually, the data should be collected by hand and kept in form of reports or spreadsheet. Using such data, the brand manager can monitor the increase or decrease in a product’s market performance over time. Usually, the product marketing managers often spend most of their time in the manufacturing rather than the marketing side. Research indicates there are elaborate systems that have been developed to inform the product marketing manager about the manufacturing process but very few to reveal progress on the marketing side (King, pp. 5). Similar to the brand manager, the product marketing manager is often centered on the opinions of the customer. He or she takes a kin interest in factors such as addition of new features, lowering or raising of the prices. Product managers therefore keep an eye on the brand of related evaluations (Powell 34). In most cases they take action following reports of market share, customer satisfaction, sales and price sensitivity. Public relations managers work in departments that are preoccupied with identifying how the public perceives the company, using indicators such as exposures on TV or leading newspapers (Lenskold 14). It is important to note that companies receive both positive and negative exposures and both should be used in measuring the success of the PR department. The different responsibilities carried out by the above mentioned positions are crucial in the measurement of marketing effectiveness. They are vital for the identification of the three essential things in a marketing campaign; the cost, the revenue or leads’ generates and the life time value of customers (King, pp. 4). The advertising manager is concerned with the number of viewers the company reached and how those can be increased. There are specialized software applications that allow advertisers to catalogue and track these numbers (King, pp. 6). Sales manage rs always think about the sales figures of the various commodities offered by the company. They carry out comparative studies to determine sales figures across different regions. This individuals form part of the company accounting systems, they ensure that orders are booked, invoices are sent and commissions are always paid.Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Focus on performance measurement through automation It is important to note that performance measurement and marketing automation work hand in hand. For effective evaluation of marketing performance, the data capture process should be automated (Buyline Research 9). The automation should ensure that data are not only captured and organized but also measured in the most effective way. Savvy marketing automation investment decisions include greater â€Å"control of the measuring capabilities that is offered by different solutions, the capture process, the different available option and instant analysis† (King 35, pp. 3). There are several automation solutions but most are not effective as they require much more effort to access data before shaping for relevant analysis. A study has been carried out to identify the marketing performance monitoring activities that are under automated portfolios in a number of firms (Powell 9). When marketers were asked about what they desired mos t in the coverage areas, they felt underserved, and gave interesting responses. Most of them stated that better measurement capabilities would increase their loyalty by 51% with the likelihood of increasing their investment by 44% (Lenskold 12). This implies that marketers are in constant search for performance measurement solutions to determine the effectiveness of their marketing activities (Stern 24). They hope that there will be a rapid development in the automation tools which will in turn help them to foster internal and external success (Buyline Research 6). Economic Modeling Studies have established that in order to successfully measure the effectiveness of advertising and other marketing activities, it is imperative to carry out econometric analysis. This is important for establishing the impact of each element in the marketing mix, the effectiveness and ROI (King, pp. 6). Advanced data mining techniques should be employed in the determination of the strengths and weaknesse s of the marketing program implemented by a given firm (Lenskold 8). The identified challenges can be corrected by carrying out changes in the pricing, advertising and promotion. The econometric analysis examines influences from the external environment in the form of competition, changes in the market environment due to seasonality and changes of other economic conditions in order to have a better understanding of how they impact sales performance. If the results are accurately determined then planning can be carried out for future advertising, promotion, pricing, and other marketing activities to improve sales performance and distribute marketing resources for increased ROI (Stern 7). Studies have shown that econometric models provide a standard measurement technique across different portfolios of a business, marketing lines and markets; an accurate measurement of the historical performance; forecasting of the future performance and the optimization of the business operations thro ugh the media mix or channel (Buyline Research 11). Econometric modeling often requires input from a variety of key factors that include external data such as consumer data, economic performance data, competitive advertisement and internal data such as product specifications and process changes. Channel data should incorporate TV, radio, branch, magazines, point of sale and direct mail information (Buyline Research 11). Product data can include deposits, lending and other products that can be attained from the banking sector. Historical data should be collected from modeling inputs and arranged in the order of time series fashion so as to allow for adjustments to be made in the future regarding the seasonality, competitiveness, market mix, distribution changes and interaction effects (Powell 56). All the dynamics in the marketing arena are put into consideration so that a model is developed to allow pinpointing variations in any specific component. In spite of the fact that economet ric modeling provides a valuable tool for evaluating difficult actions such as spending on media, there is no single measurement method that can provide the necessary insights into marketing effectiveness across the different channels (Buyline Research 13). Therefore, it is better to combined with other control methodologies to provide an overall effective means of measuring the effectiveness of marketing activities of a given company (Buyline Research 14). Test/Control methodologies The dynamic nature of marketing activities makes it difficult for a firm to evaluate the impact of individual marketing portfolios on subsequent customer numbers. This occurs because the potential customers are informed through many different channels in the marketing arena. Due to this observation, it’s common for the effect of specific marketing activities on consumer behavior to be overstated or understated because the impact of other is not properly evaluated resulting into a biased measureme nt (Lenskold 5). Well designed experimental tests are usually multivariate which can be effectively used to measure the impact of an individual marketing activity. Matching is commonly employed in the measurement of the effectiveness of advertising. The method relies on the contrasting outcomes of participating markets with outcomes of comparable non participants (Buyline Research14). Conclusion This paper sought to report on the difficulties that are frequently faced while measuring marketing effectiveness. It further describes how best the issue can be tackled by describing the strategies that can be employed to measure the effect of individual marketing activities. Indeed, it has been established that it is very difficult to carry out an effective measurement of the impact of marketing activities. There are a lot of companies worldwide that are often misled and may not be able to know what marketing activity contributes. This paper has provided some of the most effective ways thr ough which firms can effectively measure their marketing activities. They include automation and economic modeling as well as the use of test controls. Works Cited Buyline Research. Frustrations With Japan Essays - United States, Free Essays

Frustrations With Japan Essays - United States, Free Essays Frustrations With Japan December 8, 1941 was a solemn day. The day after Japan dropped the bomb on Pearl Harbor, the people of the United States mourned. If ever there was a time when Americans wanted to enter World War II, it was then. The United Sates had been deceived by the Empire of Japan, with whom they thought they were at peace. Franklin Roosevelts speech to Congress, asking for permission to declare war on Japan, shows the resentment and despair of the American people. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, many Americans felt a lot of resentment against Japan, and the Japanese. Much of this resentment arose because Japan gave the United States a false hope of peace between the two countries. Also, from the evidence, it appeared that the attack was premeditated. Because of the distance between Japan and Hawaii, it was found that the attack had been planned days, possibly weeks beforehand (Roosevelt, 170). During the time before the attack, the Japanese had deceived the United States into believing they were at peace with one another. Because of the bombing by Japan, the American people were mourning the loss of their soldiers lives. They also were angry with the destruction of the naval and military forces, along with the attacks on Hong Kong, Guam, the Philippine Islands, Wake Island, and Midway Island all within hours of each other. The American people, along with the government, wanted nothing more than to destroy Japan, and win the war. In the Monica Sone document, I belief that the frustrations that the Americans were feeling are expressed in their entirety. The American people were so angry with the Japanese people, and so afraid that the Japanese would attack again, that the Americans basically rejected anyone that looked Japanese. To the Americans, regardless of whether you were native born, if you looked Japanese you were the enemy. The American government did not want to take chances, so they gathered all the people of Japanese decent and made them live under military law. They even had to live in military camps. How horrible for all those innocent people to be assumed the enemy when they had lived as Americans their whole lives. In the Monica Sone document, it is evident that, at first, the government was looking to only interview the important people in the Japanese community to ensure none of them were spies. However, things got out of control and the United States government declared that all people of Japanese decent give up their property and move into assembly centers, in order to isolate them from the rest of the American people. This shows how terribly desperate the American people felt after the Pearl Harbor bombing. Looking at Franklin Roosevelts speech and Monica Sones document memoire, it is evident how desperate the American people were to save their country and destroy Japan. They would go to such extremes to save what they believed to be right and just. There are many similarities between the two documents, but they are showed in an opposite manner. In Roosevelts speech you see the American determination to defeat Japan and win the war. In the Monica Sone document you see the desperation of the American people to protect their country, and their resentment of the Japanese people. Both represent the feelings of the Americans, but unfortunately, the Monica Sone document shows what extreme measures the American people were willing to go to protect what they believed to be right.

A Guide to Elliptical Constructions

A Guide to Elliptical Constructions A Guide to Elliptical Constructions A Guide to Elliptical Constructions By Mark Nichol An elliptical construction is one in which a word or phrase implied by context is omitted from a sentence, usually because it is a repetition of a preceding word or phrase. The three principal types of elliptical construction, with the omitted text enclosed in brackets, follow: Noun ellipsis: â€Å"I went swimming, and John went [swimming], too.† Verb ellipsis: â€Å"She favors romantic comedies, and Jane [favors] musicals.† Verb-phrase ellipsis: â€Å"He went for a walk, but they didn’t [go for a walk].† In a sentence in which repeated elements recur in more than one clause, a comma marks the elision of these words or phrases, and the clauses are separated by semicolons: â€Å"Igneous rock is formed from the cooling and solidification of magma of lava; sedimentary, from sedimentation of surface and underwater material; and metamorphic, from heat or pressure action on igneous, sedimentary, or another metamorphic type of rock.† In simpler sentences, you may omit the comma if you also replace a semicolon with a conjunction: â€Å"Molten rock is called magma in its subterranean form and lava during and after eruption.† But if you retain the semicolon, retain the marker comma as well: â€Å"Molten rock is called magma in its subterranean form; lava, during and after eruption.† Elliptical construction is particularly useful when listing statistics: â€Å"In 2010, he hit fifty-five home runs; in 2009, thirty-seven; and in 2008, forty-six,† or â€Å"In the school election, Tom received 345 votes and Tina 322.† Proper ellipsis in sentences spoken by different people varies: When John says, â€Å"Mary graduated,† Jane can simply reply, â€Å"She did?† rather than echoing, â€Å"She did graduate?† or â€Å"Did she graduate?† But if John says, â€Å"Mary graduated with honors,† Jane can’t respond, â€Å"Jim with highest honors.† When a verb form is omitted in one of two instances, its repetition, not its original appearance, should be omitted: â€Å"My sister has never gone mountain climbing, and never will,† not â€Å"My sister has never and will never go mountain climbing.† (â€Å"My sister has never . . . go† is ungrammatical.) When using an elliptical construction that in its full form would employ the comparative terms as and than, do not omit the first instance of the terms before the conjunction: â€Å"Golden eagles are as large as and just as majestic as bald eagles,† not â€Å"Golden eagles are as large and just as majestic as bald eagles.† Similarly, do not omit than: â€Å"Coyotes are smaller than but just as impressive as wolves,† not â€Å"Coyotes are smaller but just as impressive as wolves.† To test for grammatical soundness, temporarily omit the phrase including the conjunction and the comparative up to the object: â€Å"Golden eagles are as large . . . bald eagles† and â€Å"Coyotes are smaller . . . wolves† are ungrammatical. Also, be sure to omit only the words not essential for clarity: â€Å"The bus doesn’t go to or return from the city,† not â€Å"The bus doesn’t go or return from the city.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The American Civil War as a period of killing and loss for the Essay

The American Civil War as a period of killing and loss for the American nation - Essay Example The paper tells that losses were incurred on the population of the South, North as well as the African Americans during the Civil War. The experience of death and suffering spread as a plague during the period of war. The concept of dying in honor and killing was changed and it is for this reason that the American society and the government today place high respect for those who die in civil service. Before this war, most of the Americans had died at home with their families. When this war started, men mainly had to go to the fields preparing themselves to die in honor as their religion suggested. This led to a psychological adjustment of finding someone on the battlefield who could pass their message to the kin if they were to die a good death. The Civil War resulted in a large number of deaths and altered many important aspects of the life of the North, South as well as the African Americans. The present research has identified that the consequences of the American civil war were u nimaginable for both the sides that are the North, as well as the South but the people from the South, suffered greatly. This is because the Southern side did not have much of capacity both in terms of wealth and power. Despite its reduced strength, the Southerners initially thought that they were strong enough to take over North and would be able to conquer it easily. As a result of this lack of judgment, South lost more of its people. Â

Law and Ethics in Health and Social Care Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5000 words

Law and Ethics in Health and Social Care - Essay Example For instance, in UK and Wales, it is essential to get consent from a patient who is an offender under NOMS 2007. (Eher et al 2011:33). Two fundamental theories on medical ethics have been specifically powerful in the British medical profession in the last 250 year, and they are viz. Utilitarianism or Consequentialism – This based on simple concept, and this concept demands for the outcomes of each action to be resolved and that with the predictable most favourable outcome is the best way to adhere. The most constructive outcome is one where there exist the least human pains and most contentment. Deontological or Duty-based ethics- This theory utters that medical professionals are duty-bound to some actions in their medical practice despite the outcomes. For instance, it is significant to be honest ever with their patients. However, in contrast, a utilitarian may say that it is wise to say lie to a terminally ill patient as regard to their diagnosis if the real fact is going to increase their pain and sufferings. In real scenarios, the above two theories exist simultaneously in the medical profession. For example, it is often significant that medical professionals inform the patient the real truth about a terminal diagnosis. In reality, the majority of medical professionals may like to avoid informing the truth to the patient directly. (Khan 2006:1). There exists in moral medical practice that shapes moral base of the physician –patient relationship. These notions are competence, valid consent, rationality, competence justified paternalism, shared decision-making and truth telling. The cornerstone of ethical medical practice is to obtain valid consent from a patient for any type of therapy or diagnosis types .By obtaining a valid consent from a patient for a medical treatment, the medical practitioner is thus respecting patient’s personal autonomy and self-determination. The moral rule that forbids one individual from denying another of free dom demands that medical practitioner should get valid consent from the patient. It is to be observed that for touching a patient’s body, a physician needs valid consent from the patient. Physicians acknowledge respect for autonomy by receiving valid consent before any treatment is started. The traditional and more widely used phrase â€Å"informed consent† is not adequate in ethical practice since it connotes mistakenly that by just offering information to the patient is enough to authenticate the consent process. (Bernat 2008: 24). Majority of the doctors, despite unconscious to moral theories, do acknowledge that there are some fundamental norms of medical ethics that are vital to their profession. The four norms which are advocated by James Childress and Tom Beauchamp in 1970s that are widely employed and acknowledged are: Autonomy – it connotes self-rule, and this rule compels medical practitioners to honour the decisions and wishes of the patient, even if they seem to be wrong. Under this, there are rules like â€Å"avoid conception†, â€Å"respect confidentiality â€Å"

Lady Macbeths language in Act 5 Scene1 and Act 5 Scene 1 Essay Example for Free

Lady Macbeths language in Act 5 Scene1 and Act 5 Scene 1 Essay Ambitious, enthusiastic and assertive are merely few of the words that describe Lady Macbeth, a woman so controlling she convince her husband to murder the king. She carefully plans it out, but her obsession leads to nightmares, and further on a brutal suicide. The Act 1 scene 5 opens with Lady Macbeth, reading out a letter sent to her from her husband, regarding the encounter he had with the three witches and what they had said about the prophecies, and that he would become king. She then begins her first soliloquy, this doesnt just echo the witches prediction but also suggests how certain she is that the prophecies will come true Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be/ what thou art promised.'(Lines 14-15) She shows signs of her exceptional language from the start, and she speaks in blank verse, she emphasizes her confidence and sense of purpose in carrying out the murder by using iambic pentameters That I may pour my spirits in thine ear (line 25) she starts to build up her control and self-confidence, becoming so powerful she is more ambitious than her husband, the warrior of a great a army, but this is mainly because he is to soft-hearted, she uses the breast-feeding metaphor to describe this too full of the milk of human kindness,'(line 16) This in contrast to her wish that she be the man that Macbeth isnt, so that she could be in complete control, as the man is the one who is mainly in control, unsex me here,.(line 40) To emphasize her control of language and thought she uses balanced phrases between the lines May read strange matters to beguile.'(Line 26) She is also easily able to change her state of mind that is extremely compatible depending on the situation she is in. Her double sided nature can switch easily can switch easily, obviously this can be seen by the audience but isnt visible to the other characters. When the messenger enters the room, Lady Macbeth is still speaking of her plans on murdering King Duncan, and to avoid him understanding what she is saying she uses coded language and speaks in riddles, this also for fear that she is overheard and someone realizes what she is conjuring up for the future, to catch the nearest way,'(line 17) While the messenger remains in the room the change in her character and her language is yet again visible, she stops using ostentatious and sophisticated words, and instead returns to her ordinary self . Another incident which took place while the messenger was in the room, was when she got angry, this was mainly because she feared that she wouldnt have enough time to prepare and fully plan out the rest of the murder Thou art mad to say it (line 31) Once again proving her ability to switch focus especially at the right time, what is your tidings?'(Line 29) This also suggests how she is over powering the messenger and proving how authoritative she is. Her prevailing nature becomes so controlling that even tries dominating the evil spirits as she calls out for them come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts!'(Lines 39-40) And to dominating Macbeth she uses persuasive flattery Great Glamis! Worthy Cawdor!'(Line 53) And to demonstrate the control she has, not only over her husband but also over the entire situation, she uses imperatives, look like the innocent flower (line 64) she has become her own woman and fully responsible over her every action, no longer does she need anyone to control her, on the contrary, she will control them, and she has already done so over her husband. She can also vary the tone and pace of her language, the dark side that slowly started devouring her after she called for the evil spirits soon takes effect on Lady Macbeth, she uses fricatives to expose this, they are all words that begin with the hard C sound, and this is how she establishes her second soliloquy. She uses the fricatives mainly so that it would sound as if the raven himself was speaking, Creaks, Come, Crown, Cruelty, etc. Her role in the murder becomes so much more superior to that of her husband. Throughout the scene she enlightens us with her dominance and solid control, this is mainly conveyed through the way she speaks so much more than Macbeth, and he is hardly given a chance to speak, but this also shows how she is scheming the murder and you shall put/ This nights great business into my dispatch (line 67) Her highly elaborated and sophisticated language though out the scene is ended with a rhyming couplet, this emphasizes on the great reward which will soon belong to them. For them to become King and Queen which shall to all our nights and days to come, Give solely sovereign sway and masterdom (lines 68-69) Over all though out Act 1 scene 5 she shows great infatuation onto carrying out the massacre, the words that she applies into her language are imposing and dignified, to achieve utmost control, which was the basis for her success over persuading Macbeth into committing the murder. The built up to Act 5 Scene 1 is tense and the pressure starts to mount as Macbeth begins to face truth of what is going to happen, but he faces reality through fatality, and after contemplating what he must do, he tells his wife that he will not carry out the murder we will proceed no further in this business but to his displeasure, he is once again persuaded to perform the murder execution. The witches also tell Banquo of the fortune he is to achieve, and that his offspring are to become kings. He murdered Duncan in order to make the witches prophecy to come true, but now he plots to murder Banquo and Fleance so that witches promise to Banquo will not come true. Lady Macbeth suffers from a guilty conscience, despite being the main instigator of the murder. The scene begins with her walking in her sleep, and dreams that she and her husband are murdering King Duncan. The difference in her language, from Act 1 Scene 5 can be recognized instantly, you can tell this as she speaks in prose Yet heres a spot.'(Line 31) The sophisticated vocabulary and grammar are no longer a custom of Lady Macbeth, it is replaced by language which is almost of a childlike simplicity one, two, why, then its time to do it (line 34) This scene mainly conveys the manifestation of her guilt and how badly she feels about bringing the plan of the murder to this extent. This pushes her limits and certain actions question her sanity, she once again speaks in a child like manner The Thane of Fife had a wife'(line 41). Previously, she was in total control, but now the burden has become too much, she has become a broken woman, this mainly due to the fact that she had to play the role of the man, this can be proved as on several occasions she has had to play this role, for example, when she had to disguise the visions Macbeth was seeing after the death of Banquo. The disturbances in her mind have made her think without order hell is murky! Fie my Lord fie!'(Line 35) and remembrance of the past as she contemplates on what had happened heres the smell of blood still (line 48). As Macbeth and Duncan are two characters who have been the main subjects of Lady Macbeths mind, she relieves past conversations that took place (Macbeth talking to King Duncan), To bed, to bed: theres knocking at the gate (line 63). One of the things that she mentioned in her sleep was concerning the ghost of Banquo I tell you again, Banquos buried, he cannot come out ons grave (lines 60-61), this was the subject of a past conversation with her husband. The manifestation of her guilt soon becomes an obsession, still in her sleep and unaware of what she is saying and totally senseless. She is still able to speak about reality and what has been going on, she is also able to release her true emotions and express how blameworthy she feels would these hands never be clean?'(Line 42) As Lady Macbeth is in a deranged state of mind, the excuse that she was asleep is valid enough to cover up and hide what she had said throughout the entire period that she was sleep walking To bed, to bed, to bed (line 65). Lady Macbeths great ability to switch focus, use of impressive words, her controlling and convincing taunts and her authoritative state of mind, somehow fall to pieces, she turns into a broken woman. The tale of Lady Macbeth unfortunately ends tragically, her plans turn to dust, and her life ends in a brutal suicide. As for her husband Macbeth, despite becoming King his rein didnt last, and he was killed during a battle and Malcolm became king.

A Jungian Analysis of How Like a God Essay -- How Like a God Essays

A Jungian Analysis of How Like a God Isaac Asimov was certainly correct when he stated that the writer of a story doesn't necessarily know everything about it. The author, Brenda W. Clough, claims not to have had an acquaintance with Carl Jung's work when writing How Like a God.   However, the architecture of the book is strikingly Jungian.    In the beginning of the novel, the main character, Rob has very little interest in his appearance. Many computer people are like that, and he has his devoted wife Julianne to make all the sartorial decisions for him. He looks like a desk warrior, pale, uninteresting, and out of shape. He wears neutral colors, beige and brown, to symbolize his undifferentiated state. In second part of the novel, under the intolerable agony of losing his family, Rob's cold dark side emerges and quickly takes over. The new regime is inaugurated by unnatural and life-denying behavior: not eating, not drinking, not sleeping, but sinking down into the dark on a park bench. Rob's appearance alters as he takes to wearing rags and a dark blue toggle coat. He loses weight because he forgets to eat. Even his sexuality is warped. When he faces up to what's going on he immediately tries to change by getting a haircut. At the hairdresser he notices music for the first time in the book. He also notices he's blonder . He now has a light, and a dark, side.    In part three of the novel, under Edwin's beneficent influence, Rob cultivates his better inclinations and inadvertently worsens a one-sidedness. He forces the tramp, now stigmatized as a frightening monster, down into the sub-basement of himself -- the trap-door of which, however, has no lock. Edwin is the natural ally of Rob's good, lighter side... ...the power warp him into not-self, of becoming Gilgamesh. He knows the face of his own evil now, and the knowledge is a responsibility.    In this soup of symbols Edwin has two roles. He is of course a hermeneut, guiding Rob towards self-realization. But he is also Virgil, the icon of reason and light and learning to Rob's Dante. (This is the reason why Rob is vaguely repelled by The Divine Comedy in the New York Public Library. At that point he's in full avoidance mode, and even the first line of the poem cuts too close to home. â€Å"Midway in our life's journey I went astray from the straight road, and woke to find myself alone in a dark wood.† Ouch!) Edwin can guide Rob forward to the final confrontation with his dark side, but he can't battle the shadow himself. In fact Edwin finds Rob's unconscious realm intolerable, since reason has no place there.

Daughter Essay

Latasha Echols Professor Jacobs English 1101 20 February 2013 A Mothers Story Have you ever considered how becoming a parent could affect your life? I never knew how much a child could change my life until I became a mother. Growing up I never really knew what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go in life. I liked to party and be rebellious. I felt like nobody cared about me, so I didn’t really care about myself or where my life went. When I turned 19, everything that I ever felt, thought, or did, became a major reconsideration when I gave birth to my beautiful daughter, Dalayshia Briana Harris.During my childhood, I felt like my mother wasn’t there for me, which led me to make a lot of negative decisions in my life. Becoming a mom has made me as my dad would say, â€Å"Wake up and smell the coffee†. The one thing that I’m sure about now that I’ve became a mother, is that, I do have a purpose, and I want to be the best role model I can be to my dau ghter. September 28, 2007 is a date that changed my life forever. Growing up I never really felt like I had a place in this world. My parents got married and had me at a young age. My mom wasn’t quite ready to be a mother, and my dad did the best he could. My parents divorced when I was twelve, and that day is when my world ended and I felt like no one cared about how the outcome of their decisions would affect me. I thought the anger, loneliness, and my battered emotions, was the way my life would be, so I accepted it. As a child, I tried to numb myself from the pain and move forward in my life. My teenage years were quite memorable, but unfortunately not as positive as I wish they could have been. When I turned sixteen, I felt like school was not important. I could never focus and my behavior left me getting into a lot of trouble.I chose to drop out of high school and see what else life had in store for me. I started hanging out with the wrong people, which led me to getting a false identification card that said I was twenty-one. Then I began going to adult clubs with these friends. As I entered the club life, it was like a new world to me. I started drinking and partying on a consistent basis. The club scene became so much a part of me that for the next couple of years of my teenage life, that’s all my life consisted of. I had no goals and no positive outlook on my life. The only thing I became to know and like to do was party and hang out with my friends. When I turned eighteen, little did I know I was in store for some life changing news. When I turned eighteen I officially became an adult. Little did I know that in becoming an actual adult I was about to be hit with the most shocking news ever. One morning I woke up, I just didn’t feel well at all. So the next day I went to the doctor to find out why I was feeling so under the weather. The doctor ran some test as I sat there and patiently waited for the results. Finally the doctor comes in and says, â€Å"Congratulations, you’re pregnant†! I didn’t quite understand, so I asked him to repeat his self once more, so I could make sure I heard right before I went into a complete state of shock. The doctor repeated himself with saying, â€Å"Congratulations, you’re pregnant†! My whole world started spinning. I didn’t know how to take the news. I was scared and confused. I didn’t really know how to take care of myself, better yet bring a child in this world. Before going to the doctor the only thing I had become immune to doing is partying and drinking. Now I had to reconsider my whole life. Being a mom I never really considered that lifestyle before. Now I was faced with a decision that was going to change the rest of my life. I didn’t really know what to do, however, all I knew is that I was pregnant. During my pregnancy I stop drinking, but continued to party. Partying was a path I continued down, because that was all I knew, and the friends I thought I had were the only people who I felt cared about me. I continued to go to the club until I was eight months pregnant. By this time, I was far enough to know that I was having a girl.I had put on enough weight, where being in the clubs became miserable. I just wanted to rest, something I had not done in a long time. As I became further along in my pregnancy, I started to think about what I was going to do and where I was going to be once I had my daughter. When I first became pregnant my mom told me she didn’t want anything to do with me, but as I got closer to my due date she became more accepting. I packed my stuff up and decided to go back home to my mom’s house, where I could be to myself and focus on my future until I delivered. I spent the remainder of my pregnancy at my mom’s house.I had nothing but time to rest and think about the future I was soon to be faced with me and my unborn child. As I thought about my futur e my mind was still everywhere, and uncertain about what I was going to do. I didn’t know how to be a mom or how I was going to take care of a child. My due date was set for September 22, and was getting closer and closer. It was September, 28 2007, and the weather was beautiful and warm. I was set to deliver my daughter on September 22, but my baby was running late, guess she was just not ready to come in the world yet.September 28, I was supposed to go to the hospital and be induced since my baby hadn’t been quite ready to come on the original due date. When I got to the hospital I ended up not getting induced, because I went straight into labor. After twelve hours of labor, the time had come for me to push. After my first three pushes I felt a major release of pressure. When I looked up, there she was, my beautiful baby girl! After spending two days in the hospital, I got to bring my daughter home. From that point I knew my life would change forever. When I looked at my daughter, everything I ever felt missing in my life as far as the love, neglect, and loneliness started to go away. All I knew was that I wanted to love and be the best mom I could be for my daughter. From that moment I brought my daughter home is when I realized that I was somebody in life. I wanted to change, so I could reflect, and be the most positive person that I could be for myself and child. Today in my life, if someone were to ask me if I ever considered being a parent and how it could affect my life, I could honestly say â€Å"Yes†, because now I am a parent and have truly adapted to the word sacrifice.Once I became a mom I wanted to be the best possible role model I could be for my daughter. I knew for me to be a good role model, I had to work on myself to set a good example for my child. Everything that wasn’t important to me when I was a teenager had become goals for me to accomplish as a mother. I went back to school and got my GED, and now I am a col lege student. I no longer go to the clubs or drink. I’ve realized that there is way more to life than what you settle for. Now I can say I am a great role model not only for myself, or my daughter, but for anyone.

Diets Dont Help to Lose Weight

Diets Dont Help to Lose Weight There’s More to Losing Weight Than Eating Less Change Your Lifestyle! Ask any thin adult on the street if they diet. Go ahead – we’ll wait. †¦ They don’t diet, we told you so. They don’t follow gluten-free diets, diets without bread, or sugar-free diets either. Thin people don’t fast and skip meals and eat like birds. Thin people eat, actually, rather wholesomely and, well, quite a bit. What can help a person lose weight is exercising, eating healthily and mindfully. These are the keys to losing weight – not dieting on the newest celebrity-backed nutrition trends. It comes down to one’s lifestyle, discipline and foresight, and making the right decisions about what their body does, as well as good decisions about what they put in their body. Dieting doesn’t work. Lifestyle changes help lose weight. Exercise a lot! What helps a person, any person, lose weight is exercise – and rigorous exercise. This is jogging or walking briskly for 30 minutes three to five times a week. This is hitting the weight room for an hour three to four times a week. A person needs to move their body because the majority of us life sedentary lives – mostly because of our jobs, which require computers. Rigorous exercise every other day improves one’s metabolism, the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life; the breakdown of complex substances and the consequent production of energy and waste matter. A person with a strong metabolism is generally thin and can consume a great deal of food – they burn it off quickly, the burn many of the unwanted calories they consume in a given day. That’s why exercise is important: it increases the metabolic rate in a person’s body, which makes losing weight easier and more attainable. Diets don’t he lp lose weight; exercise does. Diets may help some folks lose weight – but you can actually lose weight by eating more. That’s right. Diets like Weight Watchers do more harm than good. They require the dieter to eat pre-packaged food that lacks in nutrition and substance. People don’t need that to be healthy and thin. People, to be healthy and thin, need to eat a well-balanced diet – with lots of greens, fruits and proteins, which is what a person’s body needs to function and person at its optimal level. Moderation is good for losing weight, instead of over-eating to the point of discomfort. Foods like cucumbers, leafy greens and berries provide a person energy, but also contain vitamins and minerals that burn fat – such as B vitamins: niacin – and provide a lot of fiber. Fiber is a dietary material containing substances such as cellulose, lignin, and pectin, that are resistant to the action of digestive enzymes. Foods with fiber keep digestion on track, delivering waste via bowel movements. This, in turn, maintains a person’s waste. People need protein, too. It helps build muscles and also prevents a person from cravings, as the protein takes longer to digest. People, to lead healthy, fit lives, need to exercise and eat nutritiously. Eat Not Less But Mindfully! To lose weight, people must eat mindfully and with a plan. Eating well takes planning – research, grocery lists, discipline, and sacrifice – and it’s not necessarily cheap either. But the majority of fruits and veggies are sold relatively cheap in markets and grocery stores. Though meats are a bit more expensive to purchase in quality. Nonetheless, there are many alternatives to meat as one’s only source of protein. In any rate, a person – for their metabolism to kick in full gear, to burn calories early in the day – should eat a big, wholesome breakfast every day, lots of protein, fruit, and grains; perhaps a snack later, dark chocolate or a piece of fruit. Secondly, a moderate lunch, not as large as breakfast – but still with protein and veggies or fruit, maybe a little bread. For dinner, a French dinner: moderate-sized portions, perhaps more veggies than protein. This basically illustrates a pyramid, with the bottom, the widest port ion representing breakfast. But it takes preparation, foresight, and diligence to eat like this – so you lose maximum weight. In conclusion, don’t diet; it doesn’t work. Lifestyle changes help lose weight. Exercising vigorously each week, eating healthily and mindfully – these are the keys to losing weight. Just look at an Olympic athlete. They don’t diet. They burn thousands of calories training each day – but yet they eat like kings. Thin people don’t live by Kate Moss’s famous quote, â€Å"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.†

Advanced auditing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Advanced auditing - Essay Example Rob Gray tries to identify the scope of social accounting as "the preparation and publication of an account about an organisation's social, environmental, employee, community, customer and other stakeholders' interactions and activities and where possible the consequences of those interactions and activities" With the increase in the business activities backed by globalization, business enterprises have started locating their production facilities across the world, breaking cross border barriers. Such a rapid development, many a times will result in the firms overlooking their social obligations in the interest of maximizing their profits. Hence there has been a good deal of efforts being taken to devise the techniques that measure the contribution of an enterprise to the society. These developments may be considered as the result of the increasing realization of the Social Responsibilities of the enterprises and it becomes necessary that the performance of these enterprises should be s een in the context of their fulfilling their social obligations.According to George Clark "What is now coming to be called Social Auditing is similar in many ways to Financial Auditing except that it is about everything else that an organisation does apart from handling money."There has been a number of proposals put forth to design an extended accounting system that measures the social performance of an enterprise. Linowes has proposed the preparation of a Socio-Economic Operating Statement (SEOS) to show the various social costs and benefits of actions of enterprises. This statement proposes to indicate monetary values of various actions of an enterprise classified in to following categories: Relations with people - to include items like training programmes for handicapped workers, contribution to schools for employees, extra costs incurred in hiring persons from minority or suppressed communities. These items would constitute the contribution of the enterprise in 'improving' the relations with the people. The 'detriments' that need to be shown may be items like postponement of installing safety devices etc Relations with Environment - monetary values of improvements and detriments are to be listed and the net effect shown separately. Relations with Products - In a similar way, monetary values of improvements and detriments are to be listed. Since there is yet to be a significant development to take place in this area, many of the existing models aim at measuring the performance of an enterprise vis--vis the society tales into account the factors like human resource contribution, public contribution, environmental contribution, product or service contribution and net income of the enterprise. 1.2 Environmental Audit: "An environmental audit is a means by which businesses can assess the environmental impacts of their operations. At its core is the measurement and evaluation of all inputs and outputs from the production process." (Australian Government) In the context of the increasing emphasis on protection of environment, environmental accounting and auditing have assumed special importance in recent years. Environmental Accounting aims at measuring the impact of the activities of an organization on the environment. The resultant product is the environmental statement, containing the following among other things to be asserted by the management: A brief description of the activities of the organization and the effect of such activities on the environment as envisaged by the organization A description of the organisation's environmental policy, programme and management systems to implement the stated policies A summary of the figures of emissions which may cause pollution of air and water, waste generation, consumption of raw material, energy, water and other significant environmental aspects. There should also be presented a comparison of such data with the legal norms if any
