Fall Travel Day 1 Hartford
Fall Travel Day 1 Hartford Overall, a good first day on the road. Woke up early, packed for the first leg of the trip, left Boston. (Note to self: pack the night before, otherwise one is bound to forget things when one is rushing to get out the door.) Made good time to Hartford; checked into the Hilton (didnt see Paris or Nicky though) and grabbed the MIT boxes that were waiting for me. Headed over to GHAMAS to meet Howard Thiery, the director. Totally cool guy. I mean, how can you not be cool when your last name is Thiery and youre the director of a math/science academy? I know the spellings not a perfect match, but its close enough for me. After that meeting (which included discussions on everything from admissions to the point at which upper-level math/physics becomes philosophy because its so far out there) I headed up into the senior room for the GHAMAS school visit. Robbed my uncle (who is the GHAMAS math guru) of his entire linear algebra class (sorry). A great bunch of people thanks for being so hospitable guys! Sam Lord (the new regional chair for Hartford ECs) and I had an early dinner at Wood Tap, where I got to hear all about his adventures as a student at MIT. Got back to GHAMAS to set up for the Hartford central meeting around 6PM, and thats when things started to get interesting. :-) In a nutshell, Id had trouble getting in touch with the previous regional chair and thus had to book the Hartford meeting myself (Sam didnt take over the position until after the meeting had already been booked). Id relied on the past few years Hartford numbers less than 150 in attendance. So Id booked a room that holds 150+ and figured things were all set. Last week someone clued me in to the fact that MIT had cancelled the New Haven meeting this year, and thus all of those folks would be making the trip to Hartford. Yikes. Alls well that ends well. We did have 50-75 people standing and/or sitting in the aisles if you were one of those people, I apologize once again but still the meeting seemed to go really well. Folks asked great questions at the end, and the other details went flawlessly. GHAMAS has phenomenal facilities I literally just plugged in my laptop and all of the audio/video was instantly rockin (usually we have to bring that stuff with us). They had a free parking garage steps from the meeting location, and the campus is in a good central Hartford location. If we do the meeting there again next year (and I hope we will), well move to the theater, which holds a few hundred more. Sorry again to everyone who had to stand. I got a tour of GHAMAS after the meeting wow. They dont have chalk boards they have these things that look like big white boards but are hooked up to computers so that after the class each GHAMAS student can download everything the teacher wrote. This may sound normal to you guys, but to me (a 92 high school grad) this was mind-blowing. Ah, technology. Finally got to my hotel room around midnight and here I am. TIRED! See some of you tomorrow in New York.

Love is the desire to always be happy, and finding goodness is the key to happiness. In seeing the goodness of the ones a person desires, he or she is reminded of the importance of portraying oneââ¬â¢s good qualities. This is the heart of Phaedrusââ¬â¢ argument, that ââ¬Å"there is a certain guidance each person needs for his whole lifeâ⬠¦and nothing imparts this guidanceâ⬠¦as well as Loveâ⬠(178D). He continues to argue that the best possible society would be full of lovers and their beloveds because all of its members would be constantly aware of being their best selves in the presence of their loved ones. Phaedrus contends that surrendering to eros brings out an individualââ¬â¢s goodness, but he doesnââ¬â¢t address whether this goodness exists when a person is living without Love. Aristophanes discusses his belief that people fall in love when they find the their ââ¬Å"other halfâ⬠who fills them with a sense of completeness. He tates, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s obvious that the soul of every lover longs for something else; his soul cannot say what it isâ⬠yet he pursues the feeling of unity and completeness that love provides (192D). This sense of wholeness comes from finding the goodness within oneself when a person is with his or her matching half. Socrates disagrees with Aristophanesââ¬â¢ argument because he doesnââ¬â¢t know that each personââ¬â¢s other half is good. The concept of having a matching half may provide comfort to some, but it implies that each person should only have a desire for one person. It is very common for people to love multiple people through the course of their lives. Aristophanes may not be incorrect in saying that every soul is searching for its matching half, but the key part of his argument in this context is that when a person finds someone he or she loves, that person feels a sense of fullness. I believe this sense of feeling of fulfillment comes from rediscovering the good within oneself. The argument in the Symposium that most emphasizes this point is that of Socrates. He believes that everyone is pregnant, either physically or mentally. Those who are pregnant physically bear children; this is their way of spreading life and goodness into the world. Those who are have a pregnant soul bear wisdom, creativity and beauty into the world. Both forms of pregnancy leave behind a small piece of goodness and the process of pregnancy proves that this goodness begins within the individual. A woman has most of what is required to make a baby within her body before finding a lover. She has healthy organs that make her body function, and she is capable of maintaining her body. She has eggs in her ovaries that are waiting for a lover to fertilize them. When she finds a lover, his sperm combines with her egg and a beautiful baby develops. Both the man and the woman have all of the ingredients to create offspring, but the unity of the lovers is required to complete the process. In the same way, each individual has wisdom within their souls, but itââ¬â¢s necessary to combine two souls to expose the goodness to society. The process of bringing beauty and wisdom into the world through spiritual pregnancy is more abstract than physical pregnancy, but is equally important. In the same way that a physical lust develops between lovers, souls can crave each other. Socrates states that the soul is drawn to other beautiful and developed souls, and these people connect through intellectually stimulating argumentsââ¬âthey give birth to new ideas and thoughts. He believes that, ââ¬Å"when [a person] makes contact with someone beautiful and keeps company with him, he conceives and gives birth to what he has been carrying inside him for ages. And whether they are together or apart, he remembers that beautyâ⬠(209C). Here, Socrates says that the beauty, truth, knowledge, and goodness were all contained within the lover before the relationship was established; it is through dialogue that this beauty is exposed. Being aware of displaying our good behaviors and trying to impress our loved ones can be a good thing, but sometimes oneââ¬â¢s heightened awareness of goodness can make him or her feel inferior. When Alcibiades crashes the philosophersââ¬â¢ dinner, he begins his speech of praise for Socrates, but quickly Alcibiades reveals his overwhelming sense of mediocrity when in Socratesââ¬â¢ presence. ââ¬Å"Yes, he makes me feel ashamed,â⬠Alcibiades confesses, ââ¬Å"I know perfectly well that I canââ¬â¢t prove heââ¬â¢s wrong when he tells me what I should do; yet, the moment I leave his side, I go back to my old waysâ⬠(216B). Alcibiades believes he will never be good enough for the pious and goodness-filled Socrates. Alcibiades admits that he strives to be his best self in front of Socrates, but he lapses into old habits when they are apart. Alcibiades declares, ââ¬Å"my whole life has become one constant effort to escape from him and keep away, but when I see him, I feel deeply ashamed, because Iââ¬â¢m doing nothing about my way of life, although I have already agreed with him that I shouldâ⬠(216B). Therefore, Alcibiades is aware that he has the potential to be good, but he only has the strength to be noble when heââ¬â¢s with Socrates. The tragedy is that Socrates doesnââ¬â¢t want to take Alcibiades as a lover, leaving the latter to suffer through life feeling lonely and inadequate. Alcibiades should remember that he has the power to be moral and display his goodness, which could in turn lead him to another lover. All of the philosophers whose ideas Iââ¬â¢ve discussed above reveal that love brings out the good in each of us, but I believe that the good is contained within the individual before exposure to a lover. We seek lovers because we crave the reminder to always be our best selves. We take pride in acting morally, and we feel good when others recognize our good behavior. We have desire for someone when we see his or her beauty and goodness, and we hope to be desired for our goodness as well. When two lovers come together, there is a feel of unity because thereââ¬â¢s an understanding that both people will be noble for each other. People are compelled to stay with a lover for the entirety of their lives because they want to continue to be full of goodness. When we are without a lover, we may feel lonely and can lose touch with our internal goodness. We crave love because we need the constant reminder to be our highest selvesââ¬âthe self we are most proud of. Because Love makes us extra aware of our goodness both internally and behaviorally, itââ¬â¢s important to remember that we have the power to be our noblest selves at any time, with or without a lover. In the airline industry, the model is a combination of low-cost effectiveness and broader and diversified routes and services that were traditionally offered by the legacy carriers. The legacy carriers use low-cost strategies, point to point routes, and franchised regional routes to increase their load factors as well as gaining passenger traffic (Sekhar, 2009, p. 67). To compete with the legacy carriers, JetBlue, a low-cost carrier, combine both long haul and short-haul routes. Conversely, the airline has also ventured into inter-regional and international routes. Although the model is short-lived and needs to be reviewed from time to time, it has helped JetBlue to enter the markets that were previously controlled by the legacy carriers (Mazzucato, 2002, p. 55). First, there is a rise of PRASM resulting from Domestic Operations. PRASM refers to Passenger revenue per available seat mile. PRASM is a fundamental metric in the industry. However, JetBlue remained immune to the fluctuation of the foreign currency as a result of its huge presence in the domestic market. JetBlues unit revenue rose during the period while its stock grew by 56% to a high of $27.4 per share. This was an achievement considering that the shares of legacy carriers decline by approximately 10%. SAT Essay Scoring The Real Story SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips It's 17-19 days after your SAT test date, so you log into the CollegeBoard website, eager to see how you did. You look at your essay score and see...ââ¬Å"9.â⬠You check for more detail in your score report and see that Grader 1 gave you a 5, Grader 2 gave you a 4...and that's it. So how are SAT essays graded, and how can you use this information to your advantage? A Quick Look Into SAT Essay Grading The first thing you do when you sit down to take the SAT is the 25-minute essay section. Once you write your essay (as well as the rest of the test), though, what happens to it? Your essay is scanned and uploaded to an essay grading interface and graders then grade it. SAT essays are currently graded on a scale of 1-6 by two graders, giving you a total essay score out of 12. This score out of 12, along with your raw score on the SAT Writing multiple-choice questions, is factored into your total SAT Writing score. If the two graders give you scores more than 1 point apart (i.e. if one grader gives your essay a 2 and another gives your essay a 4), a third essay grader will be brought in to resolve the issue. Your SAT essay scores are based on each essay graderââ¬â¢s impression of your essay as a whole, which is why the SAT essay is said to be graded "holistically." You donââ¬â¢t get a certain number of points taken off for grammar mistakes or for organizational issues, as you might on a normal school essay. In fact, graders are trained to ignore minor errors in grammar, sentence structure, and so on. Important note: In March 2016, the SAT essay will be changing in format and grading structure, so some of this information may not be accurate for that test. Check back for updates! SAT Essay Scoring: Official Policy How are graders supposed to grade? I've copied the official policy from the CollegeBoard below: ââ¬Å"The SAT Scoring Guide expresses the criteria readers use to evaluate and score the student essays. The guide is structured on a six-point scale. Since the SAT essay is scored holistically, readers are trained to use the SAT Scoring Guide in conjunction with anchor papers, which have been scored by consensus as representative examples. The language of the Scoring Guide provides a consistent and coherent framework for differentiating between score points, without defining specific traits or types of essays that define each score point.â⬠What's the SAT Scoring Guide? While I've written another article that goes into detail about the SAT essay grading rubric, I'll give a quick rundown of its main points here: Point of View, Logic, and Support You must: Have a clear opinion on the prompt (a thesis). Make sure you clearly answer the essay prompt, both in your introduction with a thesis statement and over the course of your essay. For example, take the essay prompt were "Are important discoveries the result of focusing on one subject?" Your thesis (and your essay) should clearly answer this question, preferably with a "yes" or "no" (SAT essays that try to answer "sort of yes, sort of no" tend to be weaker, since you only have 25 minutes to write your essay). You must: Use specific examples to support your point. You can't just say "my point of view is correct because it is" and be done. Instead, you need to use specific examples from history, literature, pop culture/current events, or your own life to support your thesis. You must: Explain these specific examples in a way that supports your thesis. It's also not enough to just write your thesis and then describe a specific example - you also need to explain why that example supports your thesis. Organization and Focus You must: Keep your essay organized. This means sticking to a clear essay structure (with an introduction, body paragraphs for each example, and a conclusion) as well as making sure your thoughts are organized within each paragraph. Vocabulary and Word Choice In order to score highly, you must: Use a wide variety of vocabulary correctly. It's good to use advanced vocabulary, but only if you're using the words correctly. You can get away with a few errors, but if your word choice starts to seriously affect the meaning of your sentences, your essay score may drop. Sentence Structure In order to score highly, you must: Use a variety of sentence structures. As I've said in other articles, this is the area that I struggle the most with under time pressure. As long as you don't start multiple sentences in a row with the same word (oops) or write sentences that all have the same underlying structure (e.g. "Gandhi was a great leader. India was in trouble. The world was watching."), however, you should be fine. Grammar, Etc. You must: Use standard written English grammar. Again, it's all right to make minor errors in grammar and punctuation in your essay - graders are trained to overlook minor issues. If your essay has consistent issues with grammar that make it difficult to understand your reasoning, however, this will affect your essay score. SAT Essay Grading in Practice Essay graders donââ¬â¢t grade based on how correct your statements are. This means that you can write things like "My friend was killed by a polar bear because he didn't go to the instructional course about how to deal with bear attacks" or "The Scopes Monkey Trial ended with Scopes being executed for his belief in evolution" and the graders will have to take it as true. My reaction when I first learned this: WHAT. How can that be true?! So I investigated further and found the reasons that lie behind this rule. Because SAT essay scorers donââ¬â¢t have time to fact check each and every fact in each and every essay, they must take everything you write in your essay as true. Plus, the stated purpose of the SAT essay assignment is to "show how effectively you can develop and express ideas" in 25 minutes. The CollegeBoard understands that under the time pressure of a 25-minute essay students will sometimes write things like "World War I took place in the early 1800s" (instead of "the early 1900s"). As long as your statements logically support your thesis, you're in the clear (although if you write things that donââ¬â¢t make sense that undermine your main point, your essay grade will suffer). Second, while thereââ¬â¢s nothing in the publicly available official guidelines that say how long each grader has to grade, interviews with and articles by former SAT essay graders have provided further information about the grading process: if an essay scorer takes longer than 2-3 minutes to grade each essay, she has to be "retrained." This process is annoying, as the grader has to grade a series of pre-graded essays and make sure she's within a point of the grade before she can get back to grading actual student essays. Graders may also be forced to retrain if they run into a prescored essay that's been thrown in among the student essays and don't score it within one point of the score. To avoid all of this retraining, graders will sometimes score in the middle of a range to stay on the safe side. For example, if an essay is at least a 4, a grader might score it a 5 because that grade is within one point of a 6 OR a 4 (and might be right on target with a 5). Let us return Grader 18927 to the vat." What Does This Mean for Your SAT Essay? Now that you know a little more about the official SAT essay grading policies and the reality of SAT essay grading, how can you use this information to write higher-scoring essays? Donââ¬â¢t hide your thesis. Graders spend 2-3 minutes per essay or else face a retraining penalty. They will not be happy if they have to hunt all over to find your point of view, so state your thesis clearly in your introduction. Be organized. Again, because the grader is spending a short amount of time on your essay, you want to make it easier for her to follow your logic. You can make a few mistakes. As long as errors in your grammar, punctuation, and spelling donââ¬â¢t significantly affect the readability of your essay, your essay's graders wonââ¬â¢t penalize you for it. Similarly, as long as the facts you use in your essay logically support your thesis, it doesn't matter if they're actually true or not. For instance, you could completely change the plot of a novel like George Orwell's Animal Farm, and as long as the changes you've made make logical sense, the graders must not penalize you for it. Here are ten strategies none ideal in every circumstance for achieving gender neutrality. 1. Use He or She Before: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether he is prepared to give a presentation.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether he or she is prepared to give a presentation.â⬠This solution is stiffly formal and is awkward in repetition; use sparingly. Using he/she, s/he, or any such alternative (or an invented neutral pronoun like ze) is not advised. 2. Alternate Between He and She Before: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether he is prepared to give a presentation. If he is ready, tell him that he may begin when he is ready.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether he is prepared to give a presentation. If she is ready, tell her that she may begin when she is ready.â⬠This solution works only in the case of two or more references to a hypothetical subject of either gender. In the proximity of the references in the examples, this solution is awkward, but when the references are at some distance from each other, it can be effective in moderation. 3. Omit the Pronoun Before: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether he is prepared to give a presentation.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Ask whether the student is prepared to give a presentation.â⬠This revision does not clearly indicate whether the student or another person is being asked; writers must recognize and respond to such lack of clarity if it affects comprehension. 4. Repeat the Noun in Place of the Pronoun Before: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether he is prepared to give a presentation.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether the student is prepared to give a presentation.â⬠When the noun is repeated in the proximity shown above, the sentence is awkward; in a more complex sentence, the repetition may not seem so obvious. 5. Use a Plural Antecedent for the Pronoun Before: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether he is prepared to give a presentation.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Ask the students whether they are prepared to give their presentations.â⬠Employing a plural noun and a plural pronoun may change the meaning somewhat; writers must be alert as to which other nouns, if any, should be made plural as well. 6. Replace the Pronoun with an Article Before: ââ¬Å"Ask the student to prepare his presentation.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Ask the student to prepare a presentation.â⬠7. Revise the Sentence to Use the Pronoun One Before: ââ¬Å"A prepared student is more likely to succeed than if he has not done sufficient research.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"A prepared student is more likely to succeed than an unprepared one.â⬠8. Revise the Sentence to Use the Pronoun Who Before: ââ¬Å"A student is more likely to succeed if he does sufficient research.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"A student who does sufficient research is more likely to succeed.â⬠9. Revise the Sentence to the Imperative Mood Before: ââ¬Å"A student must be well prepared for his presentation.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Be well prepared for the presentation.â⬠10. Use a Plural Pronoun Before: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether he is prepared to give a presentation.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Ask the student whether they are prepared to give a presentation.â⬠Many writers reject this solution because traditional grammar rules frown on using a plural pronoun when the antecedent is a singular noun. However, the bewildering absence of a gender-neutral plural pronoun in English calls for a radical solution. This one is widely used in informal writing and in conversation, and itââ¬â¢s commonsensical to welcome it in formal writing. That welcome, however, has not yet been forthcoming, and, regrettably, writers should use the plural pronouns them and they in place of singular pronouns with caution. Some writers reject the notion that one should avoid gender-specific pronouns in universal contexts at all. After all, why change long-standing usage that has only recently been challenged? But these writers, though sensible in the logic of their argument, are culturally insensitive and, ultimately, are on the wrong side of linguistic history. The Importance Of Capital Gearing Finance Essay Financing and investment are two major decision areas for a company. In the financial decision, the company concerns with determining the best capital structure. There are only two ways that a business can raise money debt or equity. With the right option, the business can minimize its cost and maximize company value. Bos and Fetherston (1993) described that determining debt and equity is an important financial decision faced by companies. The relationship between debt and equity is considered as capital gearing. Hence, in this report, the gearing ratio and its influence to WACC, company value and shareholder wealth will be assessed through the two major theories. Capital Gearing Capital gearing is a term describing the relationship between debt funding and equity funding in a company (Financial Management, 2007). The simplest formula for gearing ratio = (%) For example, ABC Ltd has à £1,000 of debt and à £2,500 of total assets. Thus, capital gearing of this company is: = 40% According to NGFL Wales Business Studies (2009), a company with high gearing is the one who has most of the funding coming from borrowing. It leads to reduced profits available to shareholders because of the increase in interest rate. Moreover, if interest rate increases, the financial costs of business will also go up, thereby total costs of business will rise. However, if a company has a high gearing, it is not really a bad thing. The company may need more money for their expansion activities, taking the opportunity to invest by borrowing at low rates. By using capital from borrowing, the company can take advantage of tax shields. A company with low gearing is the one who has most of the funding coming from investment of shareholders. It proves that the company is developing through reinvestment of profits, minimizing risk (NGFL Wales Business Studies, 2009). For example, in 2009, Apple Inc had Total debt/equity also known as gearing ratio at 0% (ADVFN, 2010). However, low gearing may indicate that the company is not aggressive enough to survive, and may not be seeking opportunities for growth (Pham, 2009). Thus, according to Accounting for Management (n.d.), the importance level of capital gearing is subject to various views. Effects upon WACC, company value and shareholder wealth Debt and equity Debt and equity are the two major sources of funds for a company. So, using of debt and equity proportions are the measurement tools for capital structure. (Glen and Pinto, 1998) In fact, cost of debt is generally less expensive than cost of equity. Nemethy (2010) provided two major reasons for that. Firstly, debt is a secured loan, which may be seized by the lender when the borrower cannot payment their loans. Meanwhile, equity is an unsecured loan because the shareholder cannot seize anything, they only have the right to vote at a shareholders meeting. Thus, an unsecured loan has to a higher interest rate than a secured loan. In other words, cost of equity is expensive than cost of debt. Secondly, Nemethy (2010) said that when the company issues debt in the form of bonds, they pay interest out to their investors, this interest has to be deducted by taxation. It is also called the debt tax shield. Conversely, when the company issues equity, they pay out dividends. These dividends represent corporate income, and they are subject to double taxation: one time by corporation and another time by shareholders. Thereby, the cost of debt is less than the cost of equity. With the two major reasons above, virtually all companies prefer to use debt than equity. However, the increase of debt leads to the increase of risks because when the company borrows money, they would be dependent on the lenders. UoS (2007) stated that a highly geared company may also experience difficulties in attracting fund from investors, who are not attracted by the risks involved in a high-geared company. At that time, the market price of the companys shares will fall. So, the company should choose debt or equity, and the influence of capital gearing to WACC, company value and shareholder wealth. We will assess this problem based on the two theories. The traditional view Modigliani and Miller The traditional view The traditional view of capital structure theory, based on observation and intuition, suggests that an optimum capital structure exists (Cornelius, 2002). In other words, the capital structure of a company has effected on the cost of capital. The more debt in the capital structure of a company, the lower of WACC is. The weighted-average cost of capital (WACC) represents the overall cost of capital for a company, incorporating the costs of equity, debt and preference share capital, weighted according to the proportion of each source of finance within the business (Cornelius, 2002). The formula to calculate WACC: WACC = [ x ] + [ x ] For example, a company has an issued share capital of 1,000 ordinary à £1 shares. The company wants to buy two machines with the price of a machine as à £1,000. As mentioned above, cost of debt is generally less expensive than cost of equity, so, we can assume that cost of debt = 15% and cost of equity = 20%. To buy two machines, the company needs to have à £1,000 for the second machine. There are two options for the company. Option 1: Issuing share (ungeared company) It means that the company will have 2,000 shares in total with à £1 per share. â⠬à ¢ Total equity = 2,000 x à £1 = à £2,000 = Total assets = 0% = 20% x = 20% Option 2: Borrowing (geared company) In this option, the company has à £1,000 from initial issuing shares and à £1,000 from borrowing with 15% of interest. â⠬à ¢ Total debt = Total equity = à £1,000 Total assets = Total debt + Total equity = 1,000 + 1,000 = à £2,000 = = 0.5 or 50% = [15% x ] + [20% x ] = 0.075 + 0.1 = 0.175 or 17.5% It is clear that when the gearing capital of a company increases, its WACC will decrease. According to Watson and Head (2006), the market value of a company is equal to the present value of its future cash flows discounted by its WACC. Market value of a company = Thus, when WACC of the company decreases, assuming that other factors are constant, the market value of the company increases, in other words, the company value and shareholder wealth increase. The traditional view is usually represented as follows. According to UoS (2007), from all equity financing, WACC first declines because debt financing is cheaper. At higher level of debt (beyond X), cost of equity increases because of higher risks out weights the advantage of cheaper debt financing. Hence after X, the WACC will rise. X will be the optimal debt ratio, where the company will minimize its cost of capital and the company value is maximized. In conclusion, gearing capital is very important because it effects to WACC, company value and shareholder wealth of a company. Modigliani and Miller view In 1958, American academics France Modigliani and Merton Miller (MM), presented a radically different view of capital structure theory. They demonstrated that two companies with identical investments would have the same value, regardless of their gearing capital (Cornelius, 2002). As a result, there is no optimal capital structure for a company. MMs propositions can be presented as follows. MMs proposition (without tax) UoS (2007, p.274) argued that with the same size and the same level of business risks of two companies: one company was ungeared company, another one was geared company. The value of an ungeared company equals value of equity in an identical geared company plus value of borrowings in an identical geared company. Therefore, the only factors that influence the value of a company are risk and return. Returns required by shareholders as reward for risk, , will increase at a constant rate as gearing increases due to the perceived increased financial risk. The rising would exactly offset the benefit of the additional cheaper debt in order for the WACC to remain constant. Lenders have security for their debt so they will not feel at risk whatever the level of gearing; therefore, is constant (ACCA F9 Financial Management: Study Text, 2009). This can be shown as a graph. The WACC, the total value of the company and shareholder wealth are constant and unaffected by gearing levels. No optimal capital structure exists. For instance, there are two companies with the same size and the same level of business risk: one company was ungeared company, another one was geared company. One machine got back à £200 profit yearly. The data of the two companies as follows. Ungeared Company Geared Company Share capital à £1,000 à £1,000 Debt à £1,000 Machines 1 2 EPS at à £200 profit level 0.20p 0.25p If the investor in an ungeared company borrows à £1,000 at 15% interest, after buying the second machine, that company has the profit = à £200 x 2 = à £400. â⠬à ¢ EPS = = 0.4 p After receiving dividends from ungeared company, that investor has to pay interest for the lender with 15% interest per à £1. Hence, the actual return that investor can receive = 0.4 [15% x 1] = 0.25 p. The Big Five Personality Traits - 867 Words
Of the Big Five personality traits, I scored highest on neuroticism. I compared myself to my friend. My friend scored highest on extraversion. I scored lowest on extraversion, whereas my friend scored lowest on agreeableness. I was somewhat surprised at my results that my friend received. However, I was not surprised by my results. I am a typically anxious person, so I knew I would probably score high on neuroticism. However, I thought my friend would score higher on agreeableness. I donââ¬â¢t agree with some of these because I believe that my friend falls a little higher on the agreeableness, while I believe we both fall a little higher on the openness scale. I also believe there is more to a personââ¬â¢s personality than that. There are several ways in which the uniqueness of each individual can be portrayed by just a few traits. A lot of times, trait psychologists use the Big Five to measure someoneââ¬â¢s personality just because itââ¬â¢s a simple, convenient way to d o it. Another reason psychologists often use the Big Five to measure personality traits is because it seems to capture every possible trait that there could be in a personââ¬â¢s personality. According to the book, itââ¬â¢s easier to use the Big Five because itââ¬â¢s like a radio: would you rather have dozens of radio stations with decent sound or only a few radio stations with amazing sound quality?
